7 episodes in re watching the original GI Joe on Netflix and now watching as an adult, a couple things come to mind that I would of never gotten as a kid.

1. Cobra Commander is probably the dumbest terrorist ever. He captures people and instead of dealing with them, he does stupid contests for his amusement, which the Joes always escape.

2. In real life, GI Joe would bankrupt America. Cobra would have no money.

You walk into GI Joe: Retaliation knowing what to expect – gun-porn, testosterone-dripping characters and brainless mayhem, smeared gratuitously on a wafer-thin plot. The only curiosity then, is whether the film delivers on those expectations (which have already been tempered by the first instalment – GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra). Surprise, surprise… it does.

The Rise of Cobra ended with Cobra’s master of disguise, Zartan impersonating US President (Jonathan Pryce). As the second instalment begins Zartan has settled in the Oval Office and the Joes are assigned a mission to secure Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal. Mission accomplished, the entire Joe crew is declared rogue and Zartan orders an air raid to ensure their extermination. While most of the Joes are killed in the attack, it is up to survivors Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson), Lady Jaye (Adrianne Palicki) and Flint (D J Cotrona) to foil Zartan’s plans. Zartan is aiming for world domination by forcing all nuclear weapons possessing nations to disarm. To succeed in their mission, the Joes have to seek out their Ninja team-mate Snake Eyes and rope in the assistance of GI Joe founder, retired General Joe Colton (Bruce Willis). So, you have the usual nuclear weapons, surface-to-air missiles, guns, tanks, exploding fireflies… you pretty much get the picture.

But amidst this mechanical monotony of machine-gun mayhem, there is one sequence that in itself is worth the ticket price. This is a stunningly shot aerial action sequence where ninjas battle it out suspended on zip-lines, abseiling and rappelling against the backdrop of Himalayan peaks. Ninjas? Yes, in addition to the earlier outlined all-American drama, there’s also a sub-plot involving Snake Eyes, his arch rival Storm Shadow and a Japanese marital arts master. But that doesn’t matter. Director Jon M Chu (Step Up 2, Step Up 3) brings his understanding of choreography to this action scene worthy of a Spiderman series, only a hundred times more thrilling. This is also the only portion where the year long wait for 3D conversion of the film seems justified. On the acting front, it is Byung-hun Lee and Jonathan Pryce (as the imposter president) who stand out. After delivering a commendable performance in Snitch, Dwayne Johnson relapses into the himbo persona, though he brings warmth to the few minutes he shares with Channing Tatum (before Tatum is bumped off). Adrianne Palicki sizzles in the uniform and out of it, but that’s about all the scope her character has, despite the lip-service to women-in-service platitudes. Bruce Willis is there for the pay check and it shows. The writing is unintentionally funny and the action wanton.

GI Joe: Retaliation ticks all the boxes on the wish list of its pre-pubescent, ADD inflicted prospective target audience. An action sequence every 10-15 minutes, characters unburdened by nuances, jingoistic overtones and mind-numbingly caricaturised narrative, it’s all there. The result is equivalent to Bollywood’s masala potboilers – with juvenile comedy replaced by adolescent action-figure fantasies. Deposit your brains at the ticket counters and this just might qualify as a guilty pleasure.
