Does Planned Parenthood believe abortion rights extend even to AFTER a baby is born?…Planned Parenthood insists it’s not a callous abortion chain, it’s a women’s health organization. Well, someone better get their Florida lobbyist, Alisa LaPolt Snow, some cue cards. Snow testified last week to the Florida legislature about a bill requiring medical care for babies born alive during botched abortions. When asked what should happen in that situation, Snow said it should be up to the woman, her family and the abortion doctor. Legislators from both parties were stunned that she seemed to be asserting a right to post-birth abortion. They gave her several chances to retract that, but she insisted she’s not a physician or an abortion provider, so she just couldn’t say what you should do if you had a baby struggling for life and in need of medical attention. It illustrates what I’ve said before: the abortion industry doesn’t just dehumanize babies in the womb. It dehumanizes everyone who gets involved with it.

Stacy: Overall we had an ok night. He stopped storming last night a little after 10, so we both slept pretty good till 4:30, despite some big poopies and some throwing up. Around 4:30, he started storming again and is still storming now. His back is arched and his heart rate is very high. He hasn't cried out much, so except for the constant alarms going off when he reaches a certain number, you really would know. He is a tad bit sweaty and his breathing will become a bit labored. Anyway the Dr has been in to see him and they are going to "tap his shunt" when means draw fluid off his brain, if they can get fluid easily, then the shunt is working, we just have to adjust the pressure. If they can't get fluid, the the shunt is messed up. Either way it will be surgery. I think this makes number 12 in less than 5 months. What can I say, Tripp is a fighter. So thank you for your prayers.

The blame game

The events which took place on Saturday have not only given rise to a huge response of solidarity but also of indignation, outrage and anger. Couple of hours after the tragic event people has been sharing their experience and thoughts on radios and social medias. To be faithful to our local traditions after any event, we Mauritians started playing our “expert” game. We are all became experts in urban planning and meteorological forecast, and explained how things should have been done. The second game we started playing is the blame game. Being no “expert” I will restrict myself to the blame game.

In my opinion there is only one group that has to be blame, politicians. I used the word politician because it’s not only the ministers and members of the government but also the opposition. May it be the actual or previous government and opposition.

Did any government come to the conclusion that our meteorological station need better equipments? Have any member of the opposition asked about the state of the actual equipments. Well now these questions will be asked and in two weeks time this will be forgotten and no one will have done any follow up. Maybe a special committee will be setup for recommendations and we all know that these recommendations will only pile up in some office in Port-Louis and might be lost in the next flooding. Then the parliament will be discussing on subjects such as “Madame la...”.

In a report done by GIBB Ltd for the Ministry of Public Utilities in 2003, Canal Dayot was already identified as a high risk area. The report title was “Study of Land Drainage System of the island of Mauritius” and the project description “Owing to floods at various localities in Mauritius, the Ministry of Public Utilities, entrusted GIBB (Mauritius) the task of carrying out a study of the land drainage system for the whole of Mauritius which, for the purpose of this study, had been sub-divided into 5 urban and 4 rural areas.” http://www.gibbmauritius.com/port_env.htm. So no politicians as such can say that they were not aware of the dangers of flooding in these regions.

How can we not blame the engineers when we look at the outcome of Saturday’s rain? Something must have definitely gone wrong in their planning, design or calculation. Or is it simply that water evacuation was never in their specifications. Even here I will blame the politicians. I have no doubt about the capabilities of our engineers but I have serious doubts whether their recommendations have been seriously taken into account by the respective ministry. One incident came to my mind. A road is being constructed in Ebene even though the engineers were against it. How many items went against the recommendation on the engineers in projects such as the Caudan flyover or other sites?

A special mention to our Prime Minister. He asked the help of Singapore to assist our meteorological services. I simply don’t understand why Singapore is coming up so frequently these days, does the Prime Minister have some special affinity with Lee Hsien Loong? In my opinion a Prime Minister who so often asked expertise from other country simply doesn’t believe in the abilities of professional man and women in his own country. I am pretty sure that we do have local experts in these fields who can do the job. Maybe the Prime Minister is not aware of these people or that these people does not form part of the “nou banne…” of any politicians.

To finish the blame game, I have to blame us all. James Madison, fourth president of the united states hailed as “Father of the constitution”, claimed "People will have the virtue and intelligence to select men of virtue and wisdom." Where is our virtue? Where is our intelligence? How did we end up selecting such people?
