Go activity of the past is known to us through the documents it has left. Our sources are especially the Go journals, mentions in game periodicals, sometimes the newsletters of particular Go clubs. If Go activity occurred with little or no reporting, it obviously cannot be duly recognised.
Let us look at an extreme case of this: Go playing in a concentration camp. Who will write descriptions, who will print newsletters, which texts can we now examine? We do not know whether there were other cases, but the following one is historically significant.
The best–known German concentration camps are those in Poland, and neighbouring countries, where Jews, gypsies, Slavs, and other peoples died by the millions. This occurred around 1942 till the end of WW2. But these terrible organisations had started earlier, even before the war, when they were directed against the Germans themselves. People who did not agree with the policies of the Third Reich were sent to concentration camps.
Let us consider one of them, Aschendorf Moor, near to Papenburg, at the border with Holland. The prisoners there in 1937–39 were Germans: some 1400 people, divided between communists, social democrats and people without any party affiliation.
As usual, the number of people detained was double what the camp was designed for, and the food available was half that which was required. The prisoners had to work hard in the marshes under the control of the SA soldiers [Sturm Abteilung, attack section, a kind of private police for the safety of Nazi party officials]. Many got seriously depressed. Their only relief was in sport and games and the corresponding tournaments.
Most of the prisoners were able to play chess, and this was a major relief for them. When Waldemar Wahlert entered the camp, he won the internal chess championship and thus gained respect and admiration from many prisoners. This position he then used (whether or not willingly) to spread Go!
Go material was quite easy to produce there, because suitable pieces of black and pale coloured wood could easily be found in the countryside during daily work. The new game was soon appreciated and in a short time the number of Go players grew to about 200.
This number is clearly very substantial compared to any "normal" Go group. It reminds us of the similar number of players reported among the Austrian marines in Pola, just before WW1.
Whenever we find two hundred Go players in a given place, this is a memorable event for the history of Go in Europe. However, in this case, there are parallel aspects that are even more important. There is evidence that many prisoners could resist their suffering better thanks to Go. Some of them had already abandoned any hope of survival, and found a new interest in life in this new game.
Among the many prisoners who learnt Go in that occasion, Franz Schiffer moved subsequently to Berlin, and has been for years an active player in East Berlin. He has given some information about this concentration camp in the official journal of the DDR Go players, and Wahlert himself added some comments .
Then, as a consequence of that article, Wahlert visited the Go players of the DDR; their reciprocal esteem and friendship was documented in an obituary published in the same journal, soon after Wahlert's death in Düsseldorf in 1986.
