Some reminiscences I wrote in 2001 about how Thatcher's policies were received in Ireland and New York:

In 1976 the British government instituted an attempt to “criminalize” Irish Republican political prisoners by taking away a “special status” which had previously distinguished them from criminal prisoners. The republicans resisted, first by refusing to wear prison uniforms, remaining naked in their cells but for blankets. When authorities refused to allow the “Blanketmen” to leave their cells without clothes to wash or use the toilet, a “dirty” protest began, with the prisoners remaining unwashed and disposing of bodily waste the only way they could, by smearing it on their cell walls.

The war of nerves between Margaret Thatcher and the Irish prisoners escalated to a hunger strike which brought a number of prisoners to the brink of death before a settlement appeared in sight. When the British pulled back from the settlement, a second strike started, resulting in the death of 10 men in 1981.

Worldwide support for their cause and the attendant discrediting of British policy in Ireland which gave rise to this peaceful resistance is credited as the impetus which led to the Irish peace process and agreement now being played out in Ireland.

Throughout this period daily demonstrations and other events that took place in New York City in support of the "H-Block" prisoners.

When Bobby Sands died in May, 1981, ten thousand New Yorkers gathered at separate demonstrations, one near St. Patrick’s Cathedral and one outside the British Consulate on Third Avenue. The Tyrone Pipers led the group from Fifth Avenue to join the one on Third. The immense crowd caused the closure to traffic of a number of midtown Manhattan blocks.

After the death of each of the ten hunger strikers to die, large crowds gathered outside the British Consulate. Each time they marched in procession from there to funeral Masses held outside the United Nations, each processions led by a traditional "lone piper", either, myself or John McManus.
