I've always been of the opinion that so-called "boss fights" should be completely avoidable in tabletop rpgs. I hate, hate hate it when a GM refuses to let you change "his story" and forces you down a path toward an eventual boss fight. Like no matter what you do in the game, there is simply no way you can possibly bypass or invalidate this encounter he's planned out in advance, but he just might let you set up some effect which gives you a +1 to your damage against it. Wooooo.

In tonight's Warhammer game, I had planned for some cultists to surprise the party and summon a demon right under their noses (yes, another demon, Warhammer is just like that, you know?). It would have been one damn epic fight that any D&D DM would have drooled over.

But instead, the players got really lucky and really creative and somehow managed to do certain things in advance (completely unaware!) that just made the summoning of the demon entirely impossible within the pre-written lore of the scenario. Were this another game, the GM would have just come up with some other way to insert his precious boss fight encounter. And I was kinda tempted myself to do that as well. I could have said there were secondary materials available, or the demon could manifest in multiple ways, or some other hogwash.

But you know what? Sometimes the player characters really do just get everything right in advance. Sometimes the challenge doesn't have to be directly overcome. Sometimes, the world just keeps on going, and they don't even know they've saved the day until it's been long since saved and everyone else has moved onto the next big news. Sometimes the heroes manage to totally overwhelm and outsmart their enemy, and as a GM, you just let them have the day.

Sure, as the session concluded there were half-hearted complaints about taking wounds, and being close to death or near-crazy or such. But I think everyone realized how bad it really could have been, and I like to think they appreciated it.

But it's a jerkoff of a GM who never admits when the players have bested his plans. My years of Shadowrun pretty much broke me of this habit, and fairly early on, in fact. Sometimes, a session is just a lesson for you, and future sessions will be much more difficult...

What sort of hobbies do you have and have they changed as your illness or pain has progressed?

For me, I like reading and I do find I prefer non-fiction and health books much more interesting than fiction these days. I also really enjoy writing when I get the chance. But most of my time is spent with cats and kittens and bargain hunting. I figure bargain hunting is exercise and the stuff I find is cheap.
