On behalf of Chess Kenya and ICKC, we are pleased to inform you that after the successful Special General Meeting (SGM) on 7th April, 2013, Chess Kenya has a new Constitution.

It is with this effect that we cordially invite you to attend the Chess Kenya Annual General Meeting (AGM) set for Sunday April 21st, 2013 at the KNSC Boardroom at Nyayo Stadium from 1430Hrs to 1700Hrs.

An Elections Board was set up to oversee the Elections comprising of the following:
1. Douglas Ratemo - ICKC Chair & Ministry of Sports & Youth Affairs
2. Charles Nyaberi - ICKC Treasurer & KNSC Treasurer
3. Anna Maina - ICKC & NOCK Representative
4. Additional Ministry of Sports Delegate - To be Announced

Assisting the Elections Board strictly in a verification and informative capacity are:
5. John Mukabi - Veteran Chess Player & Coach
6. Martin Oyamo - Veteran Chess Player & Coach

Agenda:
1. Election of new Office Bearers
2. ICKC Handover

Voting Rights:
The following criteria were agreed upon:
1. Payment of Chess Kenya membership fee for 2013 as prescribed in the Chess Kenya Constitution.
2. Satisfaction of the Activity clause as prescribed by the Elections board.
3. Individual members, Institutional Club members, College and University members will have a vote subject to 1 & 2 above.

Important Dates:
1. Monday 15th April 2013 - Deadline for completing submission of nominations for persons vying for elective posts.
2. Wednesday 17th April 2013 - Deadline for payment of Chess Kenya Membership fees to attend AGM.

There has been an increase in the number of old people needing more care in recent times. There are more number of people affected with dementia, Alzheimer and other mental problems, many a times coupled with other physiological problems that could make them immensely dependent on care from family/well wishers. This is also an important aspect of education for children. Children are more influenced by real life "live" experiences rather than moral preaching, value education etc. It is not about setting an example for them to follow but to instill humane values in them.
However, sometimes the adults in the household are so busy catering to the needs of the old that they needs of the children/youngsters at home get compromised. It is a tough task to balance the two. But clarity in thinking helps to some extent. The old need care not pampering! Care givers should learn to be firm and draw a line to what may at times be unreasonable demands of the old. When love is true, one would not feel guilty about one's actions. One learns to do what is needed which may not always be what is wanted! Of course, to arrive at this balancing act may not be easy or happen from the beginning, but one should bear this in mind that while providing the required care lovingly, one needs to also take care of the needs of the rest of the family.
Children can be involved in the care of the elderly. Depending on the age of the children, they can be asked to do tasks such as accompany them on walks, remind them about meal times or serve them food, make their beds or fold their clothes, arrange their cupboards etc.. Children often find it interesting to help and also get greater self confidence and develop responsibility in the process. Presence of mind, understanding and patience are key to proper care for the aged. One needs to rise above superficial show of affection and do what is needed at that moment.
Illness including dementia could be very depressing for the family. One needs to take time to relax, lighten the mood and bring in good cheer and humor in the environment. Often times, going out becomes difficult if not impossible due to the fact that the old cannot be left unattended. It is important to take turns to stay at home. Families could also use this time to discover the immense pleasures of family time while at home. Indulging in a game of carrom board, chess, cards or scrabble can be great fun. Watching a movie at home and "dialing in food" would all help get a welcome deviation from the monotonous routine. Instead of cursing the circumstances one needs to handle it with acceptance and find ways of making the best out of it.
Caring for the elderly is an art, a science and is basic humanity. Don't shy away from it, however do not let it take away the joy of your life! Your children can be part of this beautiful opportunity...
