Talked to Dow while I drove him into school, Harrison Central. He loves COD. Not the fish, the series of war games. Made him wait until he was 12 unlike neighborhood kids who started at SEVEN!
He has learned from this game! We discussed from the git go that death, murder, war, etc are a nightmare in the real world. I continue to review that with him.
What amazes me is that he has become a leader in a very good way. Today he hold me all about his team (called clans in COD land). He was able to give the strengths and weaknesses of each including his own. He was able to verbalize clearly how they worked together to achieve their goals. I told him how this would benefit him in the real world.
He even gets to connect with players around the world and he builds good relationships with them.
He has good friends at school and gets A and B grades. We have time for family too. Otherwise, except for a few chores, I let him play his game. Seems like a good use of his time to me.

Spiritual training for the next generation

The spiritual training of our children should be the foundation of our parenting. It's the process of handing over to the next generation the truths and principles that explain and govern life itself. The Apostle Paul summed up and defined Christian parenting in one statement: "... bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4, emphasis added).

Any learning process requires both theory (instruction) and practical training. You can learn the rules and details of a sport from a book, or have someone explain them to you, but until someone physically and practically shows you how to play the game, and you then start practicing, everything you know is just theory.

It is actually easier to teach your children one step at a time, in the context of everyday living, than to sit down and try to effectively communicate a systematic theology to them (although they need the theology, too). Spiritual training is much more practical than theoretical. Helping your kids know and love Jesus gives them an unshakable foundation and solid preparation to live the life that God has given them. It also causes you to live out your calling as a parent—which strengthens your faith.
