How does one begin to tell this story?

Probably with a reference to a place called Hadden’s Market, on Genesee Road, in Flint, MI., in June of 1964.

There was this young guy, a meat-cutter at Hadden’s, who had his eye on a hot chick who came into the market every once in a while. The hot chick’s aunt happened to work at the market and she envisioned herself a matchmaker for her niece and thought that a match between the hot chick niece and the young guy would be one made in Heaven to last a lifetime and would produce some beautiful babies. So she badgered the young guy mercilessly to ask her niece out. The young guy was shy, especially around hot chicks, so he would find some excuse to not ask the hot chick out. Finally the aunt prevailed and he allowed her to call her niece and set up a “date” – a McDonald’s 15cent hamburger date. After work on date night (July 11), the aunt drove ahead of the young guy to her niece’s house – ostensibly to show him the way and also to protect him from the fierce Collie (King) guard dog that loved to terrorize strangers. If the truth be known, she was probably afraid the young guy would not show up to keep the date if she didn’t lead him to the driveway – and she was probably right. The date was kept and the young guy was entirely smitten with the hot chick. She was not so immediately smitten with him. But he was persistent and she eventually came around.

The courtship included events such as pooling resources with each other and the hot chick’s cousin to the grand sum of 50 cents (gas was 21.9 cents a gallon)so they could get a couple of gallons of gas to get themselves home after an evening of “touring” in his four gallons to the mile 1964 GTO convertible (He thought for a while that maybe the car was the real attraction for her), day trips to Canada, his helping install her parents’ swimming pool, her going fishing with him and his parents, babysitting her sister with a trip to the drive-in to see “Mary Poppins”, wrapping family Christmas gifts together in her living room, his enduring jibes from her father about how he (the father) really liked the young man who had taken her to the senior prom and so much more.

One thing led to another, and as it is wont to do, time marched on, and the young man asked the hot chick to marry him. She agreed, much to his joyful surprise. The big day came, and with his brother playing “Get Me to the Church on Time” from “My Fair Lady” constantly, the young man prepared himself for the most momentous day of his life to that point. The day before, Easter Rev. Walter Taylor united the young man and the hot chick in Holy Matrimony in Calvary Presbyterian Church.

As the days and years passed, the young man and the hot chick grew even closer and more in love. They had their ups and downs and trials but by applying the rule taught them by their parents, that marriage is a 100/100 endeavor, not a 50/50 one, and each of them striving to give a 100% effort, and relying on their faith in God and his blessings, they managed to survive the ups, downs and trials with a love and marriage that were strong. Three sons were born to them (I suspect that at times the young man was neither the very best of husbands nor the very best of fathers, but he tried his hardest and gave it his all).
