A cool breeze blows at night here now. I must admit that I stay up far too late, but there's so much to enjoy that I want time to think about it all. We went for chili, cake, pool playing, a zilch game, and the Mexican train game. His sister received the usual birthday song, but all participated--the younger members coming and going as their young lives permitted. Wednesday, we had the out-of-town contingent come to visit at the house. I made Southern Banana Pudding with the ubiquitous Nilla wafers, Jello Cook and Serve Vanilla pudding, and lots of bananas-- a Southern sort of Tiramisu. I made sandwiches out of long loaves of French bread: an Italian version with cotto salami, ham, provolone, tomatoes, and lettuce and an American turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and American cheese. Baked beans and Dr. Pepper accompanied the meal. Then a few games of Mexican train again before the swept away to return the rental car and board their flight at Long Beach airport. But yesterday was off to Los Angeles to share a gigantic Chinese buffet with the other people who work for the company that employs Charles. We spent the day with Charles on the computer with the other programmers, and I took long walks and read _The Electric Koolaid Acid Test_by Tom Wolfe. So, naturally, we were a little tired tonight, and, unfortunately, we missed the guitar's gig at some club on the Coast Highway. This was not so bad, considering that we had some time together to talk about the fact that we might be moving to Los Angeles soon. The ups and downs and the moving around.........

Today in Arizona history...
1920: The funeral of Robert N. Leatherwood is held. Leatherwood was a former mayor of Tucson and Pima County sheriff. He had helped locate mines in the Quijotoa District, operated a livery stable and planted peach and apple orchards in the Catalina Mountains.
Also in 1920: Mexican strikers abandon a freight train loaded with tomatoes 25 miles south of Nogales, Mexico, and every truck in the twin towns is requisitioned to salvage the freight and unload it in Nogales, Ariz.
1937: Renovated with Works Progress Administration funds, Bisbee's Warren Ballpark hosts its first game between professional baseball teams. The Chicago Cubs beat their cross-town-rival White Sox, 9-2. Windy City baseball fans were able to tune into the game on Chicago station WJJD through a live remote feed made possible by Bisbee radio station KSUN.
1992: Donald Eugene Harding is executed by lethal gas at the state prison in Florence for the 1980 murders of two businessmen in Phoenix. Harding, 43, is the first person executed in the state (since Manuel Silvas in 1976) and is the last to be executed while the gas chamber was the official execution method, partially due to the 11 minutes it took before death by asphyxiation could be confirmed.

The AP's new style guidelines on how to identify people who don't have the legal paperwork to live in the United States... thoughts?
Illegal Immigration: Entering or residing in a country in violation of civil or criminal law. Except in direct quotes essential to the story, use illegal only to refer to an action, not a person: illegal immigration, but not illegal immigrant. Acceptable variations include living in or entering a country illegally or without legal permission.
Except in direct quotations, do not use the terms illegal alien, an illegal, illegals or undocumented.
Do not describe people as violating immigration laws without attribution.
Specify wherever possible how someone entered the country illegally and from where. Crossed the border? Overstayed a visa? What nationality?
People who were brought into the country as children should not be described as having immigrated illegally. For people granted a temporary right to remain in the U.S. under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, use temporary resident status, with details on the program lower in the story.
