skirmish

I really just reread my statement before the skirmish and it really is quite simple to understand unless you try to misinterpret it.

Faith and doubt waged war for Job’s soul. They war in us, too. Every temptation to sin, every opportunity to help someone else, every ethical choice, every conversation is a skirmish that claims some of the terrain of our souls for light or darkness.

Myanmar, Shan State tensions. Government troops skirmish with SSA-North

Govt Troops Kill Two, Arrest 48 Accused of Belonging to Ceasefire Group

A Burmese military-owned newspaper said that government troops killed two people and arrested 48 others in an attack last week on a base run by the Shan State Army-North (SSA-North), an armed group that recently signed a ceasefire agreement with Naypyidaw.

Sources from the SSA-North disputed the claim, however, saying that most of those arrested in the Oct. 26 raid were civilians picked up in villages around Shan State’s Mongton Township, where the base is located.

According to the Myawaddy Daily, owned by Burma’s armed forces, the raid took place while the SSA-North was conducting military training at the base. It added that two uniformed members of the group were killed in the assault, while several others managed to escape.

Speaking to The Irrawaddy on Tuesday, SSA-North spokesperson Sai Hla said, “Most of the people who were arrested were Shan villagers. Only seven of the 48 were from the SSA-North.”

Leaders of the SSA-North have tried to meet with Burmese military officers in Mongton twice in the past week to ask for the release of the prisoners, but have yet to receive a response.

“Whenever we went there, they told us that they weren’t ready to meet yet because they haven’t received orders from top leaders,” said Sai Hla.

The incident is just the latest to strain the SSA-North’s ceasefire agreement with the Burmese army. Clashes between the two sides have been reported in Kyaukme, Hsipaw, Panglong, Loilan, Mongton and other townships since a formal end to hostilities was announced in January.

Local sources say that the Burmese army has increased its presence in the area since the deal was reached. In some cases, Burmese troops have occupied bases that the SSA-North vacated as part of the agreement.

The SSA-North says it continues to face pressure to hand over other strongholds in the area.

In an open letter sent to President Thein Sein earlier this month, the group asked him to order his troops not to violate the terms of the ceasefire.

The letter also called on the president to protect human rights and not to detain Shan villagers.

Watched a Russian doco on the Hungarian uprising, named "The Hungarian Trap", which used recently declassified information.

A few noteworthy points. Everyone knows about the NATO involvement and the former Hungarian Nazis, whom Khruschev allowed to return to Hungary. But I had no idea that Tito also had a hand in stirring the rebels - he really thought that he had a chance to become the leader of the socialist world. This was all in the aftermath of Stalin's death and an 18-month power struggle within the Politburo, which Beria lost narrowly. Kadar was Tito's choice - Khruschev agreed to nominate him without understanding why Tito asked. The agenda was to split Hungary off the Soviet bloc a la Yugoslavia.

The rebels were not to everyone's liking - before the Soviets rolled up to crush the uprising, they executed and tortured a sizable number of their countrymen who refused to obey their orders.

US also played a role by indicating, in the end, that they regard Hungary as Soviet property. That was the decisive factor - after that the Soviet troops were ordered into city.

The final death toll was also a surprise - only a few thousand, which doesn't seem much for an action involving heavy tanks. By standards of the recent war - just a minor skirmish. Hungary really did get off lightly after its enthusiastic support of the Nazis.

SHAHRIL HITS FORM; SCORES BRACE

LionsXII 2 – 1 Perak

Singapore, 6 April 2013: It was supposed to be Shahril Ishak’s night. Captain Marvel hit a brace in the match against Perak to maintain the LionsXII perch atop the MSL table.

The Lions continued their winning streak at Jalan Besar Stadium by notching their sixth consecutive home win by beating Perak 2-1 today. However, the win came at a heavy cost.

In the dying minutes of the game, Perak earned a freekick and the resulting skirmish at the LionXII goal mouth earned a consolation goal for the visitors. In the next game against Negeri Sembilan next Saturday, Baihakki Khaizan will be forced to sit out after collecting a another yellow card, his sixth of the season.

The match against Perak started off well with Singapore gaining a lead in the 7th minute through Shahril Ishak. The goal came about after an incisive run into the heart of Perak’s defence by Hariss Harun who found Shahril. The resulting goal was greeted by cheers from the nearly 6,700 strong crowd.

Thereon, LionsXII took charge of the game and controlled the game. They had many chances at goal but their efforts were thwarted by either the Perak defence or less than satisfactory finishing. In the 57th minute Shahril scored his second goal through a cross from Faris Ramli. The wildly cheering crowd anticipated for more goals. Hafiz Sujad who came on for Faris Ramli in the 71st minute impressed with his tenacious performance. He chased the balls tirelessly and attempted two shots at goal.

Overall, the LionsXII, were relentless in their chase to contain the visitors. Isa Halim, Hariss Harun were solid in midfield and Shahril was the dynamo that energised the entire LionsXII outfit. Safuwan Baharudin and Baihakki Khaizan were impressive in defence and Izwan Mahbud was excellent in front of goal.

During the post-match press conference Perak FC’s coach Azraai Khor said he was disappointed with his team’s performance and that the goal that they got off the LionsXII was described as a “consolation goal.” He said the LionsXII played better and lost to a better team.

Sundram in his remarks said, he was disappointed that the LionsXII conceded so late in the game. “The boys have done their best and it’s important to stay focused.” He was also happy that Shahril is peaking at the right moment.

The LionsXII next have an away game against Negeri Sembilan at Stadium Tuanku Abdul Rahman on Saturday, 13 April 2013.
