Civility abounds at 2nd Amendment forum
In the early-evening half-light of a narrow room, a slight, earnest man who identifies himself as Richard welcomes individual guests as they file in to an event in Maquoketa recently called a “Forum on the Second Amendment.”

“We got to have these rights so our government doesn’t take over,” Richard says conspiratorially to an older man entering the room. Later, Richard would read the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to a crowd of 100 or so, admitting that reading in public makes him nervous.

It’s colder than usual, certainly colder than March last year. High on the walls at either end of the room, electronic bingo signs hang at the ready for the next week’s contests. Early arrivals chat with folks they know, which seems to be about everyone.

A tall, 40-ish guy in camouflage stops and speaks of his evening drive and a neighbor who just passed away. “I’m in from Bellevue,” he said. “Should be at a fish fry. Had to tip my hat when I went by Heiar’s place. He was a good old guy. I’ll miss him.”

Within moments the meeting begins. Awoman continues her knitting.

“A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed,” a nervous Richard reads, opening the meeting.

Certainly not a long recitation. Congress in 1791 was clear. Zero overtones. No subtlety. Hardly Shakespearean. No mention of killing all the lawyers. No mention of women not owning guns, or of arming only the sane.

Before a question-and-answer period, local politicians speak briefly, one declaring that bearing arms is a Godgiven right having nothing to do with government. The gaggle of mostly men is appreciative.

All very civilized, if not downright thoughtful, with the possible exception of a young man who declares that there was more than one gunman at Sandy Hook, followed by another conspiracy theorist who claims some of the death certificates from that horrible event were filled out ahead of time. The room is silent. No grassy knoll in sight.

“I’ve heard the military is training soldiers how to disarm citizens,” says Darlene, changing the subject and looking all Revolutionary in a tri-cornered hat that nicely matches her dress, wondering if the government planned to disarm its own citizens.

AVietnam War veteran, careful as he rises from his chair because of the adorable Chihuahua resting contentedly in a waist-high front carrier, assures Darlene that this is standard military procedure. “It’s always better to disarm an enemy citizen, like a citizen in Afghanistan who is not a soldier, than shooting him,” he says, confident in his humanity, sure of his footing.

Darlene seems satisfied.

This isn’t Massachusetts in the 1780s, but it could be, plainspoken, gentle people gathering to tell the world they want to keep their guns, a choir singing in close harmony, hoping that someone is paying attention.

There are no bureaucrats here using dense jargon learned in college political science and public policy classes. This isn’t a meeting wherein anyone walks away wondering what just happened, feeling like somehow they are somehow getting screwed by the folks in charge of the microphones.

Outside, darkness is complete, and the temperature is dropping further. Spring is coming, though winter is holding on like maybe it all means something, holding some secret that only the old farmers know.

A couple of miles north of here, a shallow marsh is temporary home for 16 migrating trumpeter swans, large, glorious creatures almost lost a century ago when guys with guns shot them out of the sky, blasting away at something they assumed would be around forever.
