2012/2013 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME INVITATION FOR APPLICATION
OVERVIEW
Over the years, NNPC and Total Upstream Companies in Nigeria have demonstrated a high level of commitment towards the educational development of Nigerian Studentsas part of its Corporate Social Responsibility. This commitment has been confirmed in several ways, one of which is the annual award of scholarships to deserving Nigerian students in tertiary institutions. The programme is aimed at promoting academic excellence and qualitative manpower development in the nation.
NNPC/Total hereby invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for its 2012/2013 National Merit Scholarship Award.
WHO IS QUALIFIED TO APPLY?
To qualify for consideration applicants MUST be/Show:
• Registered FULL TIME undergraduates in recognized Nigerian Universities
• Certified 100/200 level students at the time of application
• Proof of SSCE or equivalent certificate,
• Proof of UME scores, Admission letters & Matriculation numbers
NOTE: The following categories of students should not apply:
• 300 level students and above
• Current beneficiaries of similar awards fromother companies and agencies
Applications will close three weeks from the date of this publication. Selection tests will hold on 25th MAY, 2013 at designated centresnationwide to be communicated to candidates. Candidates are to fully bear the cost of transportation to and from the venue of the selection tests. Please note that only short listed candidates will be contacted for the tests.

Aarakshan - do we need it?
When Bharat got independence in 1947, every countryman was happy to breath in free air and agonized by the massacre and partition. However, the feeling of an independent nation was far more cherishing. They were reaping the fruit of their unconditional sacrifice. Bharat and Pakistan both started creating their constitution in order to define their policies. Great Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was the head of committee who was going to draft the constitution for juvenile Bharat.
On 26th January 1950, after expatiating the draft of constitution in the parliament, Bharat got its constitution. Reservation was included in the constitution to ensure that the castes and tribes which were oppressed (financially, politically and socially) should get a preference so that there could be a state with equivalence. We know this as reservation; in hindi Aarakshan.
Do we require reservation?
YES, we require reservation in today’s Bharat but its current formation is completely unwanted. The reservation should not be based upon the caste, tribe or religion. In today’s Bharat, we need equivalence between rich and poor, thus the reservation should be based upon the financial status of the beneficiary.
Who is more eligible to get reservation?
I want to put a real life scenario (I saw this when I completed my schooling) in front of you to decide the genuinely necessitous candidate to get reservation…
X child of a government employee who got educated in a convent and scored around 50% throughout his school days and standing near his brand new bike gifted by his/her father for passing 12th.
Y child of a farmer who lives in village, helps his/her father in their fields. Got 60%, travelled 120 KMs in total to reach the university. Fees arranged by selling their crops and taking loan from local riches.
For me Y is far more eligible to get the benefits of reservation instead of X.
Consequences of today’s reservation structure
We have seen the dark side of reservation such as far more divide in the castes, dissension in society, strikes by several castes to enlist them in reserved category, skilled people are unemployed, rise of caste based politics etc. today’s reservation system is creating more chaos in society.

I don’t want to get on too much of a rant here, but I want all of my Facebook friends to really be able to grasp just how incredible all of our accomplishments were this past week in San Diego. Yes—as you may have heard by now, we won recognition as the TOP chapter in the entire country. National Champions. That’s probably the biggest achievement of my life to date. How does a chapter from a school that’s a third the size of much of our competition continuously experience so much success? The quality of people that I've been fortunate enough to be surrounded by these past four years has been unparalleled. My fellow Top Chapter presenters were an All-Star team. We had less time to prepare the presentation than ever before, but people took it upon themselves to learn what they needed to say and when the time came they were perfect.
Thanks to the quality people we have in our group, we were able to bring home a lot of other awards as well. Second best Management Team (Executive Board) in the nation. Cris Houlihan was able to earn recognition as the second best Project Manager in the country, with a project that made just under $500. He was NARROWLY edged out by someone whose project made over $35,000. That should tell you something about the quality of that man. Brendon Brauer was recognized as the second best PSE salesperson in the country. People--this guy is an ACCOUNTING MAJOR. Even I was able to get 5th place in a National Sales Competition against people who have actually studied sales before and had the time to prepare for weeks in advance. A brand new project we did this year with Dance Marathon, the 5Kolor Run, received recognition as the second best Service Project in the country thanks in large part to a tireless effort by Jessie Nemesi.
I can’t think of a better group of people to have spent a week with in California, and I also can’t think of a better way to begin wrapping up my college experience. I think it quickly became obvious to everyone in attendance just how beneficial something like PSE can be. Want to join? Well…you know how to get a hold of me.
This may be the longest Facebook status you ever see from me, but it won’t be the last one bragging about just how great this UNI PSE chapter is. My time here at school may be wrapping up…but with trips to China and Europe coming up in the next 2 months, the exciting times are just getting started!
