Thatcher croaks. Good riddance. Britain's heartland bears still-visible scars from the confrontational, merciless methods she used to impose her dark vision. In the 80's free-for-all to which she and Reagan gave birth like an elderly, demented couple who'd escaped from the secure facility to which they'd been confined, deregulation was actively encouraged and we know where that's left us. We're still reaping the destruction she sowed. Successive financial crises ever since are securely rooted in the lunatic policies that gave bankers and their cronies the power to self-regulate, with the results that we see today.

Privatisation of state-owned companies had extremely mixed results. Flexible labour markets ensured that only the privileged had any job security and that unemployment soared, along with inflation. She nurtured division, aggression and class war - and within a few years of her first election she was predictably the most unpopular British Prime Minister in history, looking certain to lose the upcoming election above all because of the dire economic consequences of her monetarist policies. What a surprise, then, that in a classic populist move she rapidly and cynically decided to declare full war on Argentina because of the Falkland Islands, thereby forcibly uniting the population behind her, leading to her re-election. She went on to lead a further decade of deep conflict in the country, using the bodies of dead soldiers as planks on the stage from which she declaimed her irrationality.

As the economy recovered during the 80s, (in no small way thanks to the revenue generated from North Sea oil and certainly not from her scorched-earth policies that destroyed communities all across northern Britain whilst social welfare, the bedrock of Britain's development into a civilised nation, was being manically dismantled) unemployment remained very high and her deeply unfair tax policies ensured that the gap between rich and poor grew ever wider. It was, indeed, yet another tax aimed at the middle-class and poor that finally brought her crashing down.

However, even as her monetary policies wreaked havoc with the population, she felt free to preach her bigoted, racist, social sermons shamelessly. There was the added advantage of having a tame, overpoweringly-conservative press at her feet and the hideous Rupert Murdoch as one of the main foundations of her power. She was "against apartheid" but called the ANC a terrorist organisation and was friends with the ghastly Botha. She "wasn't racist" but she used Europe as a punching-bag and immigration was her bugbear, as it is of so many populist right-wingers. She was a personal friend of the unspeakable Chilean dictator and criminal Pinochet, amongst others. She had no morals, few principles and viewed life through a strange system of distorted mirrors.

Those that believe her own publicity, as she did, or who have highly-selective memories or who are just plain ignorant of the real facts may indeed mourn that woman. Many of us, those who had to live, suffer through and witness at first-hand the terrible damage that this misguided, stubborn monster inflicted on us all through her tormented reign, as we waited for the interminable Narnian winter to thaw, will not.

Its a sad day for this country; we have lost our greatest post war leader and one of the greatest this country has ever known. Regardless of your polictical views, this brilliant woman sorted out a country economically on its knees and transformed it into a propsperous, respected nation again. I totally understand how miners and other state controlled, union run, nationalised instry folk feel but if they are honest with themselves, they will know that things could not carry on as they were - these were difficult times and they had to be dealt with. If the unions and Scargil etc had been more willing to accept the reality and compromise, Maggie would not have to have taken them on head-on. As it was, they wouldn't and Thatcher's had was forced to be tough. She did what had to be done in the wider national interest. We then went on to enjoy the greatest prosperity the country has ever known for the next decade. Obviously Blaire spent the accumulated surpluses bombing Iraq and Afganistan but that is another story! Maggie Thatcher RIP
