We talked to the doctor this afternoon and again this evening and we have chartered the next steps to treat Hunter’s cancer. Hunter will start chemo next Tuesday. There are several good things with this next treatment. First, we get to do it in Denver. Second, this particular chemo is only administered once a month and he will receive it for the next three months before getting the next scan. It’s a one day treatment and no hospital stays, Lord willing.
Today has kind of been an up and down kind of day and there really isn’t a good way to describe it. We are so grateful that we get to stay in our own backyard and don’t have to travel back and forth to Houston for now. There are also some harsh realities that we are working through and just trying to hang in there as a family. While this chemo is only one day a month, it is meant to last for a month as it stores itself in his tissues and releases over the month. Also, damage to the heart is the largest side effect. Hunter will have an echocardiogram done tomorrow to establish a baseline similar to what we did several years ago. The doctors will monitor his heart closely as the chemo can damage heart functions severely. There is also a life maximum on how much of this chemo his heart can take before damage is certain. We will watch his heart and go right up to that limit.
There have been some tears today as well and maybe it is simply from the unknown. The doctor said that there is no proven chemo to work on a recurrence of his type of cancer and we just have to try different things to see what might work. No other way I can think to say this other than that is scary as hell. We have heard this before, but each time we try something and it fails, the harder this becomes. Our faith carries us though. Robin and I talked about how it was before when we lived 3 months at a time in between each cancer screening. We have to have that mindset of living in the moment for each day, but this time the 3 month intervals will just have a little chemo mixed in.
In the meantime, the doctors at MD Anderson are continuing to test his tumor to see if they can find a particular agent that will target his cancer and find something that will either cure this once and for all or be a maintenance drug he can take for an extended period of time. The chemo we will start next Tuesday is the Docs best guess at a place to start. No matter what, it’s in the Lord’s hands and we are praying for another miracle.
One last thing. Our little Hunter becomes a teenager on Friday. Good grief. 13 years old! Happy Birthday my precious son! We love you. As we wrapped up our phone call with our doctor, we talked about Hunter’s birthday. I told Doctor John one thing, “Please just focus on Hunter seeing his 14th, 15th, 16th birthdays and many more and to never stop trying to find a cure.” I hung up and cried. On my way home, I cried some more. I heard a familiar song that I have listened to over and over. Songs touch folks in different ways, but this one kind of sums up where we are at.

Tonight the 50+ players training at Cockburn Lakes FC had the privilege of being trained by renowned fitness and commando boot camp trainer Mark who has previously trained the likes of the West Coast Eagles, Fremantle Dockers and Western Force.
Mark had the boys working and bonding together through a series of physically demanding and challenging exercises that whilst pushed the limits of the player group, also worked to foster an "army like" team camaraderie. As challenging as the session was, all players managed to have fun along the way. The team spirit and morale at Cockburn Lakes FC is better than ever in 2013! A number of past players have made there way back to the club this pre-season and tonight saw the return of the likes of Matt Kunesch, Brad Bertei and Craig Smith. All players new, past and present are encouraged to get down to training this Thursday night and stake a claim for any of the 3 senior sides before round 1 kicks of on the 13th of April, 2013. See ya at Warrior HQ, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6pm!

More on Sickle Cell:
Sickle cell anemia patients can also experience complications from impaired blood circulation and infection-fighting problems. These include a higher risk of certain infections and stroke as well as a condition called acute chest syndrome (what Emmy just had), which is caused by inflammation, infection, or occlusions (blockages) of blood vessels in the lungs by sickled cells.
People with sickle cell anemia also may have bouts of severe pain in the chest, stomach, arms, legs, or other parts of the body. This is caused by sickle cells blocking blood flow through the small blood vessels in those areas. Feeling tired and having trouble fighting infections are also common among patients with sickle cell anemia.
Periods of pain are commonly referred to as pain crises, which vary in their severity, how often they happen, and how long they last. Whereas one person may have only one sickle cell pain crisis a year, another may experience them more often. Crises can be brief or last hours, days, or even weeks. Sometimes pain can be severe enough to require treatment in the hospital. Symptoms can develop in any body organ or tissue and include aching arms, legs, hips, and shoulders.
