No March Blandness in Round 9 of the Candidates Tournament, we saw two decisive games and two fighting draws instead. Magnus Carlsen is alone in first for the time being after the 2012 title challenger Boris Gelfand picked off Levon Aronian in a 60-move affair. Carlsen had to fight off a positional bind put on him by Vladimir Kramnik, but ended up with the draw in the end.
The Svidler-Grischuk game became one of bewildering complexity after Grischuk sacrificed a knight on his 12th move. Svidler eventually sacced his queen to even out the material and give him plenty of counterplay. Was still a lot of chess left to play when the players agreed to a draw, but nobody could really see how things would end.

Today was an interesting tournament at Golders Green rapidplay! I scored 4 / 6 and certainly gained points on FIDE, and maybe a few on ECF.
In round 1 I beat J. Potapova, a 170 ECF-rated and 1900 FiDE-rated player, with White and 1 Nc3 Nf6 2 d4 d5 3 Bg5 g6 4 Bxf6.
In round 2 I won with Black and a fianchetto King's Indian vs Ernest Ignatovic, under-rated at 150 and 1600.
In round 3 I drew with White and the very solid exchange variation 1 d4 d6 2 e4 Nf6 3 Nc3 e5 vs Nasir Rizvi, rated 180 and 2000. I had just 2 minutes against 10 on the analogue clock, and he offered me a draw because he blundered a pawn in a RN v RN endgame. However, he had some tactics to regain it. I managed my time suicidally throughout the tournament!
In round 4 I drew with Black and the Benko gambit vs FIDE master John Richardson (218 and 2300). I offered him a timely draw before he spotted how to win material!
In round 5 I drew with White and 1 b4 vs Isaac Sanders, of 207 and 2100. I had only 3 minutes against 20, and so offered a draw in a RRN v RRB ending. It was 7 pawns each, but I had an awesome blockade over his bad bishop.
In the final round I played someone almost as infamous as Cherniaev (I already posted that game from the previous Golders Green). FIDE master Jovica Radovanovic is rated 216 and 2300. I had the better opening with White and 1 d4, but then he was a pawn up. We entered a knight ending with our flags hanging: after offering a draw earlier, I then declined one, but couldn't be bothered to try to flag him anymore, since no prize was at stake. He was so messy that I had to complain the arbiter, and the many spectators agreed with me. In the space of 10 moves, he knocked over the clock three times, placed the pieces unrecognizably and pressed the clock with the wrong hand. Anyway, he was lucky to take off my last pawn to reach K v K.

Amazing technique Carlsen! He really is nr.1!

The coach from Rutgers should have been fired. No doubt. No excusing the way he acted or what he did BUT to vilify him like this is wrong. I played sports growing up, been in a locker room or two (please save your dick jokes) and I can say with complete confidence that if you compiled the 10 worst things any coach has done at practice over a period of a few years, 90% of them would be fired. It's part of the culture. What guy who played football didn't get dragged around by his face mask once or twice? Look, you should never fire a basketball at someone, put your hands on a player or scream nasty shit at them, I think we can all agree with that, but, my point is, Mike Rice is not the only guy doing it. And, I can't forget this, the ex-coach who came out because he was "concerned for the well being of the kids" didn't give a fuck about them when he still had a job.
