Chippewa High Senior Goes for Chess Title in Tenn.
From The Macomb Daily
Michael Bowersock is like a lot of high school students.
He is hard-headed and doesn’t like to lose. He gets decent grades but admits they could be a little better.
But that is where the comparison ends.
Bowersock, 17 and a senior at Chippewa Valley High School, just happens to be one of the top high school chess players in the country. This weekend, he is heading to U.S. High School Chess Super Nationals tournament in Nashville, with a chance to be crowned the top player in the country.
He is already ranked as a national master by the United States Chess Federation, a title given to anyone who achieves a rating of 2200 or higher. For his age group, only about 30 teens across the country have achieved a rating above 2200. Ratings are set by playing and defeating other players in sanctioned tournaments.
“To be ranked as a national master, that’s unheard of at his age,” said Lance Wetherholt, a fifth-grade teacher who taught Michael at Clinton Valley Elementary School seven years ago. “He has a gift. Michael is a special case. You can’t go above a rating of 2200 without having a gift, and he has it.”
But as chess prodigies go, Bowersock, a Clinton Township resident, wasn’t one of them. He got a relatively late start on the game, gaining his first exposure to it in Wetherholt’s class at the ripe old age of 10. And he wasn’t very good.
