MALTA SUPREME INJECTS WHOPPING $100,000 INTO ONE-DAY CHESS COMPETITION

BANKS DIH Ltd, under its MALTA SUPREME brand has thrown increased support to the further growth of chess with larger sponsorship. The company on Wednesday April 3 presented sponsorship of just over one hundred thousand dollars for a one-day Rapid Chess Tournament on Sunday April 7 at the UG Berbice Campus at Tain, Corentyne.
The six-digit figure represents the highest thus far being plugged by one entity into one-day chess tournaments which are regularly organized by the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF). “Banks DIH is pleased to partner with the Guyana Chess Federation once again as the Federation seeks to promote the game in Berbice,” Troy Peters, Communications Manager of the Company said. “We expect a very exciting tournament and we urge residents of Berbice to attend the event and offer support to the players,” he added.
Shiv Nandalall, GCF President expressed delight at the company’s timely move to fully sponsor the event. Nandalall declared that due to its magnitude, the sponsorship would raise the expectations of more chess players to enter the tournament arena and compete for bigger prizes.
“Chess is a mentally demanding sport and it is called the “gymnasium of the mind” for that reason, “Nandalall commented. “The competitions are brutal in their own respect but the landmark sponsorship such as that being provided by BANKS DIH is a great motivating factor for players to enter the struggle for excellence. In this regard, the company is proving to all that it is indeed “committed to excellence”, Nandalall concluded.
The sponsorship cheque was presented at the company’s Thirst Park complex by Mr. Clayton McKenzie, Brand Manager, non-alcoholic Malts to Mr. Vishnu Rampersaud, Secretary of the chess body who extended sincere gratitude to the company.
The tournament is open to all chess players and a contingent of players from Georgetown is expected to travel to Berbice to participate. Among those expected are National Junior Champion Anthony Drayton and his senior counterpart Taffin Khan. Kriskal Persaud, former national champion who hails from Berbice is expected to be among the Berbicians vying for dominance.
Registration begins at the venue at 9:00hrs and the first pawn would be pushed one hour later. The fee for players under 20 years old is $300 while others would be required to pay $500 each. Members of the GCF would pay a reduced fee. The swiss system competition consists of seven rounds and each player would be allotted 20 minutes on the clock during each of the seven matches. Clocks would be provided by the Federation.

I'M PROUD TO BE A MEMBER OF WEBSTER UNIVERSITY FACULTY

Webster Chess Team Heads to Final Four

Webster’s Final Four team has four starters and two alternates, all of whom are ranked as chess grandmasters by the World Chess Federation. The entire Webster chess team includes an unprecedented eight grandmasters.

The NCAA “Final Four” will be under way at the Georgia Dome this weekend, but there will be another Final Four tournament taking place at the same time: the “Final Four of Collegiate Chess” (also known as the President’s Cup), to be played among the nation’s top four college teams, April 6-7 in suburban Washington, D.C.

The tournament is the final throw-down in determining this year’s U.S. collegiate team chess champion.

Webster will enter the tournament as the top seed, because of the players’ high international and national chess ratings and rankings. Webster’s team has four starters and two alternates, all of whom are ranked as chess grandmasters by the World Chess Federation.

In national coverage, coach Susan Polgar and Webster freshmen — and roommates — Wesley So and Ray Robson appeared on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” program Friday, April 5.

Good luck, Gorloks!

I said to the Gym instructor "Can you teach me to do the splits?". He said,
"How flexible are you?” I said, "I can't make Tuesdays".

But I'll tell you what I love doing more than anything:
trying to pack myself in a small suitcase.
I can hardly contain myself.

So I met this gangster who pulls up the back of people's pants, it was Wedgie Kray.

You see my next door neighbour worships exhaust pipes, he's a catholic converter.

He said, "You remind me of a pepper-pot", I said "I'll take that as a condiment".

I've got a friend who's fallen in love with two school bags, he's bisatchel.

So I was in Tesco's and I saw this man and woman wrapped in a barcode.
I said, "Are you two an item?”

So a lorry-load of tortoises crashed into a train-load of terrapins, I thought,
"That's a turtle disaster".

Four fonts walk into a bar. The barman says "Oi - get out!
We don't want your type in here"

A jump-lead walks into a bar. The barman says,
"I'll serve you, but don't start anything"

A sandwich walks into a bar. The barman says
"Sorry we don't serve food in here"

A man walks into a bar with a roll of tarmac under his arm and says:
"Pint please, and one for the road."

A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. "But why?" they asked, as they moved off. "Because,
" he said "I can't stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer."

A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt and is named "Amal." The other goes to a family in Spain, they name him Juan". Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his mum. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wished she also had a picture of Amal. Her husband responds,
"But they are twins. If you've seen Juan, you've seen Amal."
