Thank you to everybody who has contacted me over the last 24 hours. Your support has been amazing and is very much appreciated. I had a very successful Doeberl Cup tournament in Canberra. I scored 4.5/7 and finished equal 10th in a field of 70 players. Right now though, I am just so sad about the loss and injury of the brilliant, talented young guys, and very close friends, involved in the horrific car accident on the way home. :-(

Big foul on the part of American Airlines yesterday. Salam and I were at LaGuardia for a flight to Nashville for the US National Chess Tournament. The flight was fully booked and we were all, coincidentally, parents and kids going to the tournament. At the time of boarding, AA informed us that the flight was downgraded to a smaller plane and 21 people were asked to "volunteer" to take a later flight, meaning kids would not arrive in time for the first round of the tournament. Now, given that airlines give customers next to no flexibility when it comes to altering travel plans, this was outrageous. All year long kids train and fund raise to go to Nationals and more than a dozen of them yesterday had their chances screwed. And that doesn't even take into account the amount of money spent by parents and schools to get their kids to Nationals. Salam and I were the lucky last to make it onto the flight. We got here in time. But it was just luck. American Airlines sucks!

Scarborough Chess Club, in Toronto - the SCC Club Championship ( in 3 sections; a 9-round tournament) – I’m in the middle Reserves 1400+ Section ( but 1300’s have the right to play up into this section ), which has 47 players ( I am ranked 27th ). On Thursday, April 4, in Rd.3, I ( rated 1613 ) drew with Maurice Smith, SCC President (rated 1461). Leaves me at 50% - 1 win; 1 draw;1 loss.

Hetul Shah, a nine-year-old indian boy born 1999, became the youngest chess player worldwide to win against a grandmaster. GM Kazakh Nurlan Ibrayev of Kazakhstan played versus Hetul Shah on the 11 January 2009 at the Parsvnath International Open chess tournament in the first round.

Hetul, rated 1817, played with the black pieces in the Ruy Lopez game where he benefitted from an oversight by Ibrayev who had a rating of around 2400.

Also kind of satisfying to see all the work of teaching and coaching achieve great results: national champions in K-1, co-champions in K-3, 3rd place in K-5 and 4th place in K-6. Fabulous coaching from GM Miron Sher, WGM Alla Grinfeld, WIM Beatrice Marinello, FIDE Master Eugene Feldman and Expert Nelson Dunn. And now this very tired man is ready for sleep.
