I'm excited! I received a call this afternoon from the Civil War speaker we had last week! He has asked my class to sing CW songs for the background music of a video he is making about the war and has requested that several students recite the Gettysburg Address as well. This video
will have footage from Civil War re-enactments held throughout the south and will be show. All over the place!! I'm honored that he liked our singing enough and was impressed enough by the class that we have been asked to do this! It sounds fun and the students will be SO excited!!

The Memorizational Advantage

There was a time when schools made us memorize trivia. I think that is why a lot of people dislike history. Why should we know all of the presidents in order? Will we really use that information? The educational system has changed and memorization now often takes a back seat. But memorization is a very important technique for children to master. Sadly, many students today have no idea how to memorize anything.

Make memorization part of your summer schedule. Find various significant things for them to memorize and then let them choose. Shel Silverstein poems are great fun, Who’s on First provides fun pun learning for middle schoolers. Go on to tongue twisters, longer poetry, famous sayings, and scripture. Have them learn songs, jokes, the Gettysburg Address, Martin Luther King’s Speech…

How? Start with small selections and learn a few lines at a time. Each day review what was learned and then add on a bit more. Your name, your phone number or your address are good for younger children who do not know them yet. Putting it to a tune or rhythm helps. Make it fun.

Why? It is easiest to learn new skills like the ability to memorize when you are young. As students they will need to learn facts for tests, projects, plays, experiments, etc. If you want your child to be creative he/she will need to have a lot of relevant information available to draw from.

Teach them how to associate things when they memorize. Show them how to alphabetize when they are learning lists. Look online for help in ways to aid memorization. There are many tips and tricks. Children like to memorize and recite and they are capable of more than most parents normally envision.

Students who have learned how to memorize have a distinct advantage over students who have not. As adults they will need to remember many things. Can you imagine a surgeon using notes to see where a muscle is located or a lawyer who needs to refer to notes constantly? YIKES! Give your children the memorizational advantage. It is fun and smart.

Congratulations to my son Quinton. He is now considered a Great American at school. He recited the Gettysburg Address, the preamble, all the presidents(in order). Filled out a map with all the states and capitals. Wrote out the pledge with no grammatical errors and sang the national anthem. I am so proud if him.

Gettysburg was an amazing experience today … pics will need to come later as we were up early and I am pooped (it's a 2-1/2 hour+ drive from Philly). But in a nutshell, we saw the Cyclorama (amazing!!) and hired a guide to drive our car around the Gettysburg site (which is massive) for over 2 hours -- he was so passionate about Gettysburg; he talked fluidly, was interesting and had absolutely no notes (he's been a guide for 27 years). The monuments on the battlefield are one of the largest collections of outdoor sculptures in the world. The NPS manages 1,320 monuments and over 400 cannons. We ended our day by standing on the same mound where Lincoln gave his Gettysburg address which is now Gettysburg National Cemetery. It was an incredible and very humbling day ...
