The Gettysburg Address

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Stopped watching Lincoln after the first scene with Daniel Day Lewis, where they had union soldiers reciting the gettysburg address back to Lincoln. Terrible. Just terrible. Awful, even.

Put on Django. A bit easier to sit through (cartoony violence and scandalous language can be fun), but also just terrible. The performances are fine (Waltz is brilliant), but the pacing and cinematography SUCK. Tarantino, you need a cinematographer and an editor who are willing to tell you to F off.

I have a confession. I like reading tattoos. I think it would make an interesting book on reasons people pick various tats. Tats are readable on whites, Asians, Latinos and some light-skinned blacks. I know a little about typography, and the reason publications use black type on white paper -- it easily read. I do most of my tat reading on basketball players. Let me say this, and it is not meant to racial. I think tats on dark-skinned blacks are a waste of money. Blue ink on dark brown skin isn't easy to read. Therefore, some the players could have the Gettysburg Address printed on their chests and I still couldn't read it.

It has been a great, GREAT pleasure knowing you for the past 26 years --some more than others-- but I must resign myself to gather my photo archives, pack them as carefully as I can, together with my 300+ pages of carefully-gathered indexes, and retreat to my special place in the Florida Keys, to ponder which new field I will burden with my photographic efforts in between scuba diving adventures.
