The Gettysburg Address:

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Need to brag on my daughter for a second: At her school they have a "Great American Award" to earn it a student has to recite: The Preamble to the Constitution, The Gettysburg address, and the National Anthem, also have to write (with proper punctuation) the Pledge of Allegiance, additionally have to know (verbally) all of the presidents in proper order, and (written) all of the states and their capitals. She is now the first one in either the 5th or 6th grade to have done it all! This on top of a Straight-A report card now 5 years running! Very proud of her :)

Burying the Hatchet: The Great Reunion of 1913
The Battle of Gettysburg, fought from July 1 to July 3, 1863, is often thought of as the pinnacle of the Civil War. Not only did Gettysburg claim more lives than any other battle during the Civil War, but the Union forced the Confederacy to retreat back to Virginia which changed the course of the remainder of the war. After the war was over, many veterans supported having an observance of the three-day battle on its 50th anniversary. This initiative came to be known as the Great Reunion of 1913.

The Reunion was held from July 1 to July 4, 1913 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The government sent invitations to all Civil War veterans and paid for their transportation to Gettysburg. Additionally, the Battle of Gettysburg Commission established a 280-acre camp area for more than 5,000 tents to house and feed 53,407 veterans during the reunion. Many activities and recognitions took place during the reunion, including a memorable reading of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

It has been said that the reunion served as a great opportunity for soldiers on both sides to get to know one another and get a sense of closure. In fact, one account says that a Confederate soldier and a Union soldier purchased a hatchet at a local hardware store, walked it to the site where they fought, and buried it. Literally.

He followed stating the war was a "test" whether a nation so conceived and dedicated could "long endure".

For everyone that is as sick of the lack of straight, honest, heartfelt communication from political leaders today as I am, take a look at Bobby Kennedy's brief statement made nearly exactly 45 years ago from this moment, when he told the crowd, who were unaware of the events in Memphis, that he had just learned that Martin Luther King was dead. In it's painful simplicity I find parts of it as poignant as the Gettysburg Address, or even Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address. Taken together, I find them to be the three greatest public utterances ever given by an American.
