Gonna have a little rant, so please be patient with me for a tiny bit :)
From what I have heard, so many people dislike Matt Smith, and the type of Doctor he played, because he does jokes and isn't all brooding and sad like Eccleston and Tennant were (don't get me wrong, I love these two so very very much for very different reasons) when they played their Doctor.
But then, that's the point.. That was THEIR Doctor, in the Doctors time"line" and everything he had been through at that point.
Eccleston was the Doctor as he had just destroyed his homeland and finished the Time War. He was a bruised and beaten soldier, looking for somewhere to call home, so he came back to the "apes" he had saved over and over again. So of course he was going to be a bit black-humour, and brooding.
Tennant, slightly more light-hearted, after all he had Rose, the woman he loved, but he was still recovering. Then he lost her. He didn't even get to say good-bye. He met Mather, and she left him. He met Donna, finally someone who he clicked with but he wasn't in love with, or wasn't in love with him. Just someone who he could travel and have fun with. Then he had to make her forget him, so instead of giving him lip, she just off-handedly dismissed him. Any wonder he went a bit "ahhhh" in Waters of Mars? And then finally finished in End of Time?
So what do we do next... The Doctor had gotten very dark and sad, where do we go from here? And who can fill our gorgeous number 10's shoes?
Enter number 11, our Matt Smith, who has done some minor roles in T.V shows.. Suddenly he is thrust as the main character, not just in a much loved T.V series (to some) but just after David Tennant.. Now what is he going to do? Be brooding and glum because he has lost everything and had to give up his former regeneration for an "ape"?
No! He does a marvellous thing and takes the role, of this much loved Timelord and makes it his own. He is the funny Doctor. The one who kids look quote and look at and can laugh, but also the Doctor who adults, and teenagers becoming adults can look at and go, "He's in pain and still laughing, maybe we can to". He doesn't lose his pain, we get glimpses of it, he covers it up, because it is important to him that people are ok, and he knows that if he shows that he isn't then it will make the ones he loves sad. And that is not ok.
I think also we forget that this is a children's show initially, and so criticise based on what WE want to watch, not what us as children would have enjoyed..
Again, sorry for the rant, but this has been on my chest for a while. Feel free to ignore :) If you don't agree that is totally fine as well. We are all entitles to our own views :) ~Jess

I wish there were some sort of agency that one could call, to report the woman at Round Table Pizza who was calling after her child repeatedly as he misbehaved and ran amok... "Atreyu, leave those games alone... Atreyu get up off the floor...Atreyu put that down" etc... It IS child abuse, is it not? I did a little research, as to not be culturally unaware, the name was created for the book, it did not exist, so it is not "an old family name" or somesuch... I have to wonder if he is named after the character in "The Neverending story" or the BAND? One would be slightly forgivable, the other...not.
