1861–1865 Civil War: Conflict between the North (the Union) and the South (the Confederacy) over the expansion of slavery into western states. Confederates attack Ft. Sumter in Charleston, S.C., marking the start of the war (April 12, 1861). Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee secede (April–June). Emancipation Proclamation is issued, freeing slaves in the Confederate states (Jan. 1, 1863). Battle of Gettysburg is fought (July 1–3). President Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address (Nov. 19). 1867 U.S. acquires Alaska from Russia for the sum of $7.2 million (treaty concluded March 30).

1868 President Johnson is impeached by the House of Representatives (Feb. 24), but he is acquitted at his trial in the Senate (May 26). Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution is ratified, defining citizenship (July 9).

Just a reminder to my friends. There is no way you will ever contact me by a private message on my personal page and I am sorry. I have around 500 unanswered messages in there from the last 3 days. There is no way I can do that. If you absolutely need to talk to me the best ways are email or text. Then I'm still slow but I get to most of them. I'm sorry, I had no idea things would explode like this. I get about 100 notifications from facebook every 10-15 minutes. Even tagging me in a post or posting on my wall usually doesn't work. There are just too many messages to humanly keep up with. This does not mean that I don't love you all. Things will settle down at some point and I can be more sociable then. Right now I need to maintain focus because it appears we are doing some good for lots of people and that matters. Have a great day!

Pretend California Proposition 8 is not about same-sex marriage. Please try, just for a moment, to set that piece of it aside. If you can’t do that, please stop reading now because the rest of this will probably upset you.

Proposition 8 passed with 52.24% of the vote. The people were asked their opinion and they gave it and a majority of the people passed it. It does not matter what Proposition 8 is about – the fact is that over half the population voted for it. Do we really want the Supreme Court to tell us that elections do not matter? If the majority opinion does not matter, why have elections at all?

Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address which he gave dedicating a cemetery for fallen soldiers, ends with “…we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.”

If Proposition 8 is overturned by the Supreme Court, do we still have a government of the people, by the people, for the people? What do our troops fight for if not for We the People to govern ourselves through the democratic process? And, if the opinion of the 52.24% of the people of California that voted for Proposition 8 does not matter, then why should yours?

As I said, I am not addressing the same-sex issue – I am addressing how we govern ourselves. We need to return to the art of peaceful persuasion – whatever side we are on. If we do not, we will end up divided against each other, hating one another. How many times has history shown us that minority rule often ends with bloodshed?

I encourage you to stand up for what you believe in. I encourage you to work to persuade others so that your opinion is the majority opinion. But, until your opinion is the majority opinion, accept the rules of democracy. Because the alternative to democracy is tyranny and tyranny always leads to suffering.
